AL Irish

Al Irish, born in Detroit, MI, started his life as a typical kid living in the city. By the age of 14, life became not so typical. Surviving a turbulent life throughout his teenage years, Irish eventually found himself in Detroit’s own Kronk boxing gym. Almost immediately, Al was spotted by Smitty, one of Kronk’s trainers, as having a natural ability for boxing, a rare talent indeed.
After several years, Al was able to fight professionally. His record, by the time he retired, was 13-0-1. His last fight (Hector “macho” Camacho) was locally televised from Cobo Hall. Unfortunately, a head injury resulting from several years of being in the ring meant the end of his professional career.
Having a background in dance as well as music, Al was blessed with the unique ability to choreograph, break down difficult technique into easy -to- understand movements, and inspire people to become stronger, all while keeping the music fresh and laser focused on the beat.
In 1999, Al opened his first gym: Intensity. The gym was named after Al’s infamous intensity class: an hour and a half of extreme cardio that involved punching, kicking, squats, pushups – all to the beat of house music. Thumping bass and club lights filled the room giving those that came for the extreme workout the feeling that they were in a downtown club instead of a suburban gym.
Since that original gym, Al has moved and morphed into an updated version of the original Intensity gym. Having been involved in a horrific accident in September 2023, not knowing if he would ever walk again let alone workout again, Al had to reinvent his workouts. Not to be harder, but to be smarter. Today’s gym incorporates some of the old along with the new. Bag classes, B4GT classes, Intensity classes, Butt’s and Gutt’s… all just a few of the old that will transform into the new and updated versions.
